WHEN PLANS CHANGE

What to do if…

Short first steps, then the right official help. These guides do not replace emergency responders, your insurer or a local professional.

01Lost or stolen passport+
  1. Get somewhere safe and contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for replacement instructions.
  2. Gather a passport photo, available ID or citizenship evidence, itinerary and a copy of the lost passport if you have it.
  3. Report the passport lost or stolen through the official process. It becomes invalid, even if later found. A police report can help but is not required for a U.S. replacement passport.

Emergency passports and appointments depend on the consulate and circumstances. Follow its instructions before visiting.

Official guidance
02Phone stolen+
  1. From a trusted device, use Apple Find My or Google Find Hub to mark the phone lost or lock it. Do not try to recover it from a suspected thief yourself.
  2. Contact your carrier using its official number to suspend service and protect your number. Secure important accounts and revoke sessions.
  3. Consider remote erasure if recovery is unlikely, after checking how it affects locating the device. File a local police report when appropriate.

Never share unlock codes with someone claiming to have found the phone.

Official guidance
03Card stolen or suspected fraud+
  1. Freeze or lock the card in the issuer’s genuine app, if available.
  2. Call the issuer using its official website, saved number or statement. Report the loss and any unauthorized transactions promptly.
  3. Arrange replacement access to funds, review other accounts and keep reference numbers for your insurer.

Protections and reporting deadlines depend on the card, issuer and country.

Official guidance
04Medical emergency+
  1. Call the local emergency number immediately. Give your location and follow the dispatcher’s directions.
  2. Once urgent help is arranged, contact your travel insurer’s assistance line and a trusted companion.
  3. If needed, ask the U.S. embassy for information about local doctors or hospitals and help contacting family.

The embassy is not an ambulance service and does not pay medical bills. Do not delay emergency care while seeking approval from this website.

Official guidance
05Arrested or detained abroad+
  1. Ask local authorities to notify your embassy or consulate. U.S. citizens can request contact with the nearest U.S. mission.
  2. Ask for a local lawyer and an interpreter if needed. Tell a trusted person where you are when permitted.
  3. Use official consular assistance for information and contact support. Follow local legal advice.

A consulate cannot get you released, provide legal representation or override local law.

Official guidance
06Natural disaster or unrest+
  1. Follow local emergency instructions, including evacuation or shelter directions. Avoid demonstrations and unsafe areas.
  2. Check local authorities, the official embassy site and STEP alerts when you can do so safely.
  3. Tell a trusted person where you are and that you are safe. Contact the embassy or State Department if you need consular help.

Do not assume a government evacuation will be available. Keep travel documents, medication and essential supplies accessible.

Official guidance
07Missed flight or stranded+
  1. Open the airline’s genuine app or go to its airport service desk to confirm the status and rebooking options.
  2. Ask the airline about assistance available for your disruption. Contact your insurer to check applicable benefits and keep receipts.
  3. Check onward bookings and arrange safe accommodation or transport if needed. Use official airline contact information.

Bougie’s 24/7 WhatsApp support is not connected. Do not wait for a response from this site. Airline assistance and passenger rights vary by route and cause.

Official guidance
08Lost, delayed or damaged luggage+
  1. Report the problem to the airline as soon as possible, ideally before leaving the airport. Use its official online reporting route if the desk is closed.
  2. Get a case reference, keep your baggage tag and provide a delivery address and reliable contact number.
  3. Keep receipts for reasonable essentials and follow the airline’s claim deadlines. Contact your insurer if applicable.

Trackers can help locate a bag, but they do not replace the airline’s report or claim process.
